![]() ![]() Early Sunday Morning is good for a brief look at the Pearl Harbor event, but there are other books-like Under the Blood-Red Sun-that deal with the topic so much better. That voice did grate on me after a while (after Pearl Harbor, when Amber is just like “Poor me” all the time), but the set-up to Pearl Harbor was interesting (though far too long) even if the conclusion came too quickly. It reminded me of the voice in Lasky’s Christmas After All, which was delightful. Bad things aside, I did actually enjoy the voice/tone of the book. ![]() Early Sunday Morning is too short, doesn’t delve deeply enough into the aftermath of Pearl Harbor (for my tastes, but even so, I think Denenberg was a bit tame considering everything he talked about in One Eye Laughing, the Other Weeping), and has a main character that’s a little too self-centered. They’re just so shallow and bland compared to some of the others. Rating: 2/5 I feel like it’s a bit of a running joke by now, my dislike of Denenberg’s Dear America books. Early Sunday Morning: The Pearl Harbor Diary of Amber Billows, by Barry Denenberg, was published in 2001 by Scholastic. ![]()

![]() While reading about all the things that go wrong for the kids, I had myself thinking, “what if this happened to me?” “What if I get trapped in my house or school?” “I live in New England, this could seriously happen to me!” “Do I have enough food in my house?” “Maybe I should go store and stock up on water and non-perishables.” When I would sit down and start reading, I honestly had myself convinced there was going to be no school the next day. Over the next several days, the kids try to keep warm without electricity, find food to eat in the cafeteria, figure out how to get out of the school, and watch the snow in horror as it built up to just below the second story windows. ![]() The novel Trapped by Michael Northrop is all about how seven high school students get trapped in their learning establishment when an unbelievable, record breaking snow storm hits the New England area. Understanding is needed to develop policies that lead to positive change Phelps and Angner are not content with explaining economies. It explains how the accumulation of decisions by individuals can damage the very societies that individuals depend upon. The best example of this approach is the chapter on strengthening communities. ![]() ![]() This book is delightful in demonstrating how economic theory has developed new and unexpected frontiers. The author skilfully introduces contemporary economists and their research. This includes how collective outcomes are reached by groups of individual decision makers, the insights behind arguments for carbon taxes and how over-confidence can affect decision making. This allows the author to accessibly explain different areas of economic theory. However, the beauty of this book is the many other unexpected themes, such as How to Be Humble and How to Build Community. Topics include better policies to reduce climate emissions and reduce poverty. Each chapter focuses on how economic theory can lead to a more effective solution to pressing challenges. ![]() ![]() This is demonstrated by a series of case studies.
